I am pleased to inform the nation that we now have our own Folding@Home team, Folding @ The Abh Nation! If you don't know what Folding@Home is, you can read about their goals at their homepage here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/Basically, you can install a client onto your computer that uses your available processing power to simulate the folding of the countless types of proteins found in nature. By studying the information uploaded from the users (that's you!) over the world, we can start to understand how proteins might misfold, causing diseases such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many types of cancer.
Do not be concerned about the performance of your computer, though. Folding runs in the background, and uses
only the processing power that other programs aren't using. Completed proteins are uploaded back to Standford and a unit count is incremented for users and any team they may be associated to, as well as a point counter, depending on the complexity of the protein.
Our team can be found here:
Folding @ The Abh NationIf you feel like contributing to our effort, go to Stanford's
download page and find a client that suits your computer. Then, configure your client from the taskbar with your username and our team ID number, which is "110291". This is important, so that all proteins you complete, and all points you receive are tallied under your name in our team.
So, let's do something selfless, today, and fight disease!
